There are four fully trained, registered teachers working alongside the children, helping them to develop their lifelong love of learning. Our curriculum sits within the national early childhood curriculum, Te Whaariki, and also includes aspects of the Reggio Emilia philosophy of Italy. We encourage children to work together in small groups to further their learning, as research shows that social competence is one of the key factors to effective learning in the school years. We provide a learning environment that it is rich in opportunities and reflects the current interests of the children in the group. The teachers carefully set the environment so that children are able to discover their own learning pathways. We believe that in this way children will not only learn about their specific areas of interest, but will also come to understand the best way for them, as individuals, to learn. We believe strongly in tuakana teina (peer teaching) and encourage children to become 'experts' in their areas of interest, thus enabling them to teach others what they know. Projects are used extensively to encourage group work, with there often being more than one project on the go at any time. We have a strong relationship with our closest primary school, Warkworth Primary, and small groups visit the school regularly to get to know the reception room teachers, use the library, and generally get to know the school. This makes the transition between kindergarten and school very smooth. We also visit the other schools in our area once a year.
